What is the HRP?

The Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne is a high mountain trek that crosses the Pyrenees mountains through France, Spain and Andorra. At times it shares the GR 10 (in France) or the GR 11 (in Spain). It begins on the West coast of France in the border town of Hendaye and finishes at the Mediterranean in the French town of Banyuls-sur-Mer.

The final preparations are now underway for the Grand Départ on September 9th. I will begin and complete the hike with Jonathan. Along the way we will be joined by various friends and family.

The HRP was officially presented in a guide published by Georges Véron in 1968, who like me fell in love with the Pyrenees the first time he laid eyes on them.
We will be following a modified version of the original 1968 trek since the borders between Spain, Andorra and France are no longer controlled. The guide that we’ll be using was reedited and updated in 2007 – it’s not the latest info, but it’s a solid base.

Thanks for the kind words and the visit.
We’ll actually be using the Veron and Bonneaux HRP guide since all of us are either French or French speakers. I just took a peek and see that you are an HRPer yourself! I can’t wait to look more at your entries and see what you experienced.
